Short answer: you can’t stop a healthy dog or cat from shedding, but you can cut the hair on your floors and sofa dramatically. Brush 2–3 times a week (daily during heavy shedding in spring and before summer), use the right brush for the coat type, feed a complete diet with good fats, and bathe only occasionally. Sudden bald patches, itching or sores need a vet, not a brush.

Why pets shed more in India

  • Seasonal coat change. Many dogs and cats “blow” their coat in spring as the weather heats up, and again before winter. In north India, the jump from February cold to April heat triggers heavy shedding.
  • Indoor living and AC. Pets kept mostly indoors under artificial light can shed a little all year round.
  • Breed. Double-coated breeds like Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Huskies and Persian cats shed far more than single-coated breeds.
  • Diet, stress and health. Poor nutrition, stress, fleas, allergies and skin infections all increase shedding.

Choosing the right brush

BrushWhat it doesBest for
Slicker brushFine bent wires remove loose undercoat and small tanglesMost dogs and cats, medium and long coats
Undercoat / dematting rakeLong teeth reach into thick undercoat and break up matsDouble-coated breeds, Persian cats
Rubber curry brush or gloveLifts loose hair from short coats; also a gentle massageShort-coated dogs like Beagles, Pugs, Indian pariah dogs, short-haired cats

A self-cleaning pet brush set with a slicker brush and dematting rake covers most dogs and cats. Press the button and the collected hair slides off in one sheet, so you’ll actually keep brushing.

How to brush properly

  1. Choose a calm time, like after a walk or meal.
  2. Brush in the direction the hair grows, in short strokes.
  3. Work in sections, lifting the top coat to reach the undercoat underneath.
  4. Be gentle on the belly, armpits and behind the ears, where mats form.
  5. Never pull hard on a mat. Hold the hair near the skin and tease the mat apart, or ask a groomer.
  6. Keep sessions short and finish with a treat so your pet looks forward to it.

Other ways to reduce shedding

  • Diet: a complete, balanced pet food with good-quality protein and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids supports a healthy coat. Ask your vet before adding supplements.
  • Water: well-hydrated skin sheds less. Cats especially drink too little; see our guide on getting your cat to drink more water.
  • Bathing: every 4–8 weeks for most dogs, with a pet shampoo. Bathing too often dries the skin. Most cats rarely need baths.
  • Flea and tick control: keep it up all year in India’s climate.
  • Don’t shave double-coated dogs for summer. The undercoat insulates against heat, and shaving can damage the coat and expose skin to sunburn. Brushing out the loose undercoat is the better way to keep them cool.

Keeping hair off your furniture

  • Brush outdoors or on the balcony.
  • Use washable throws on your pet’s favourite sofa spot.
  • A damp rubber glove picks hair off upholstery quickly.
  • Give cats their own lounging spot, like a scratcher sofa lounger, so they shed there instead of on yours.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I brush my dog?

Short coats: once a week. Medium and long or double coats: 2–3 times a week, and daily in heavy shedding season.

Do cats need brushing?

Yes, especially long-haired cats. Brushing also reduces hairballs, because cats swallow less loose hair when grooming themselves.

Which dog breeds shed the least?

Poodles, Shih Tzus, Maltese and Bichon Frise are known for low shedding, though they need regular grooming instead.
