Short answer: most litter box smell comes from waste left too long, too little litter, a scratched plastic tray that holds odour, or too few boxes for the number of cats. Scoop at least once a day, keep 5–7 cm of litter, wash the tray fully every 1–2 weeks with unscented soap, use one box per cat plus one, and put a litter-trapping mat outside the box to stop litter spreading through the house.

Why does the litter box smell so bad?

  • Ammonia from urine. Bacteria break down urine into ammonia, which is the sharp smell. The longer urine sits, the stronger it gets.
  • Not scooping often enough. Once a day is the minimum; twice is better in hot, humid weather.
  • Not enough litter. A thin layer lets urine reach the tray floor, where it pools and smells.
  • An old tray. Scratches in plastic trap bacteria. Replace plastic trays roughly once a year.
  • Too few boxes. Overused boxes smell faster.
  • Heat and humidity. Indian summers and monsoon speed up bacterial growth and odour.
  • Diet or health. A sudden change in smell, or very strong-smelling urine, can signal a urinary or kidney problem. Mention it to your vet.

8 ways to stop litter box smell

  1. Scoop daily, both clumps and solids. Keep a lidded bin and bags next to the box so it’s quick.
  2. Keep litter 5–7 cm deep and top up after scooping.
  3. Full change and wash every 1–2 weeks for clumping litter, more often for non-clumping. Use mild, unscented soap; avoid bleach and phenyl-based cleaners, whose strong smell can put cats off the box, and some ingredients aren’t safe for cats.
  4. Pick a good clumping litter. Bentonite clumping litter locks urine into clumps you can remove. Silica crystal litter is strong on odour control. Tofu litter is low-dust and flushable in small amounts where plumbing allows.
  5. Use baking soda: a thin layer under the litter absorbs odour and is safe for cats.
  6. One box per cat, plus one, in different spots.
  7. Ventilate the area. Avoid closed bathrooms with no airflow, but also avoid busy, noisy spots your cat won’t like.
  8. Skip scented litters and air fresheners next to the box. Cats have sensitive noses; strong perfumes can make them avoid the box and go elsewhere, which is a much bigger smell problem.

How to stop litter tracking around the house

Litter sticks between paw pads and drops off on floors, beds and sofas. Fixes:

  • A litter-trapping mat outside the box catches granules as your cat steps out. A double-layer honeycomb litter mat lets litter fall through the top layer into a pocket underneath, which you just empty back into the box or the bin.
  • Bigger granules track less than fine, dusty litter.
  • Top-entry or high-sided boxes reduce kicked-out litter.
  • Trim the fur between paw pads on long-haired cats; a grooming brush set helps keep long coats clean too.

Where to put the litter box

  • Quiet, private and easy to reach, not next to the washing machine or a loud door.
  • Away from food and water bowls.
  • On every floor in a multi-storey house.
  • On a hard, wipeable floor with the mat in front of it.

When smell means a health problem

See a vet if you notice very strong or unusual-smelling urine, blood in urine, straining, frequent trips with little output, or your cat suddenly peeing outside the box. In male cats, straining with no urine is an emergency.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change cat litter completely?

For clumping litter with daily scooping, every 1–2 weeks. For non-clumping litter, every few days.

Is it safe to use phenyl or bleach to clean a litter box?

It’s best avoided. Strong disinfectants leave smells cats dislike, and residues can irritate them. Hot water and mild unscented soap are enough.

Does a covered litter box reduce smell?

It hides smell from you but concentrates it for your cat, so some cats refuse covered boxes. Daily scooping matters far more.
